Artist's Description
This painting is based on a photo that I took when I visited Patzcuaro for a few days. The island of Janitizio, is where the most famous die de Los Muertos festival is located. . It is a very steep walk and at the top of the island is an enormous statue of José Maria Morelos. Standing 130-feet high over Lake Patzcuaro, the spiraling stairway that leads to the top of the statue tells the hero’s story through sweeping murals the entire way up to the top.
José Maria Morelos was a revolutionary leader during Mexico’s quest for independence and was executed by the Spanish government. Embraced across the country, this statue was erected in 1933 to honor his memory. . I encountered this woman while I was walking up to the top of the hill.
About Susan Santiago
Susan Santiago completed her undergraduate work at New York University where she received a bachelor's degree in Art History. She later moved to Woodstock, New York. While teaching art there, she enrolled in the Art Students' League, (now the Woodstock School of Art) and studied life drawing with Franklin Alexander. After enduring many cold winters there in upstate New York, she moved to Southern California and settled in Venice, then a bohemian enclave at the beach. She enrolled at California State University, Los Angeles, and received a Masters Degree in Fine Art. She eventually decided to forgo city life and moved to Topanga Canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains. Susan taught art in the public schools and eventually became the...
